Focus On: Chain Saws

Chain saws allow you to get a handle on out-of-control tree limbs as well as perform routine trimming for the upcoming winter season. Make sure you are giving your crews hand-held equipment that is lightweight and powerful enough to complete a day's worth of heavy-duty work. The following chain saws offer the latest in power, lightweight features, debris-cleaning systems and anti-vibration systems. If you need more information about these chain saws, visit the web sites listed below.

Echo Inc. introduces the CS-370 mid-range chain saw that features a 36.3cc Power Boost Vortex engine for greater power and reduced fuel consumption. Additional features include the Echo i-30 starting system for 30-percent reduced starting effort and the G-Force Engine Air Pre-Cleaner, which spins out dirt prior to filtration for increased engine life. The CS-370 also features a rear access, automotive-style air filter; a rubber vibration-reduction system; a cold-weather air by-pass; and a dual-post, inertia-type chain brake. The CS-370 comes standard with a 16-inch bar and chain with optional 14- and 18-inch lengths also available.

Husqvarna introduces the updated 362XP, a heavy-duty chain saw that now offers a large bar mount. The new big bar mount accommodates a larger bar while the 4.6-hp engine delivers rapid acceleration and consistent power to run longer and strong for more demanding projects. For ease of operation and better control, the 326XP is equipped with Husqvarna's LowVib anti-vibration system that helps isolate the handles of the saw from the engine, resulting in low vibration levels. The Air Injection system removes up to 97 percent of debris before it enters the air filter, resulting in smoother operation, improved maintenance intervals and decreased wear on the engine.

John Deere introduces the CS62 Pro-Series chain saw that is a heavy-duty professional saw with powerhead weight of 12.4 pounds and comes equipped with a 61.5cc engine. Available bar sizes include a range from 16 to 20 inches and it is ergonomically designed for maneuverability, operating ease and comfort. Inertia chain brake, guide bar safety tip and low kickback chain allow for safer operation while progressive torque provides high-speed cutting and productivity. The semi-self-cleaning air filter extends usage time between cleanings and the no-oil-at-idle feature reduces oil consumption and keeps the environment cleaner.

The Jonsered CS 2135T Turbo is a top handle “climbing” saw, designed specifically for professional arborists. Engine displacement is 35.2cc with a power rating of 2-hp at 9,600 rpm. The saw has a compact, balanced body design for good control in confined spaces. Its gap-free, streamlined narrow-profile allows the saw to draw-up smoothly through branches. The rear handle's recessed thumb rest and textured surface provides added control. Air filter access is tool-free, chain tension is adjusted via a screw in the magnesium clutch cover and the zero-flow at idle chain oiler is adjustable from the top of the saw. The CS 2135T is supplied and distributed by the Tilton Equipment Company.

RedMax's GZ4000 is the first chain saw powered by the company's Strato-Charged engine. The 40.1cc engine, rated at 2.45-hp, has a maximum speed of 13,000 rpm. The saw is also equipped with RedMax's dust-free system, which prevents sawdust or other debris from clogging the engine intake and overheating the engine. With a choice of a 14-, 16- or 18-inch bar, the GZ4000 can take on heavy pruning or removal. At 9.67 pounds, the machine is light enough for comfortable operation in almost any position.

Shindaiwa introduces the 446s small pro saw, which is a full-on commercial unit intended for professional use, but fits into a displacement and weight range that's also popular with home firewood cutters. Features of the 446s include healthy power-to-weight, good balance, one-piece ignition and choke-throttle interlock for fast starting, quality Walbro boot-mounted carburetor, winter and summer settings on the carburetor air box to eliminate icing, anti-vibration system and a wide-mouth gas cap. The 446s can mount saw bars from 14 to 18 inches in length, depending on requirements of the cutting job. The all-season nylon mesh air filter can be cleaned with the twist of a thrumbscrew.

SOLO 633

The Solo 633 Top Handle Arborist chain saw features a 14-inch bar for increased reach, and its 36.3cc, 2-cycle 2-hp engine provides power for cutting through thick branches. Ergonomically designed, it's easy to operate even in tight spaces and has a large lanyard connection molded into the case. The 633 features an anti-vibration system, which suspends hand-held parts from engine and chain vibration, an easy-start ignition and Nikasil cylinder sleeves for cooler operation and long, trouble-free life. This chain saw is supplied and distributed by Forestry Suppliers, Inc.

The STIHL MS 230 C-BE chain saw offers a 40.2cc, 2.5-bhp engine. The M230 C-BE features Easy2Start, which makes starting this chain saw almost effortless. There's no need for a strong fast pull on the starting cord, so users can get working quickly. The chain saw also features the Quick Chain Adjuster, which lets the operator adjust the chain tension without tools. Toolless fuel and oil filter caps make it fast and easy to keep this unit fueled and ready for a quick start.
