1997 PGMA winners
The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) and Grounds Maintenance magazine co-sponsor the annual Professional Grounds Maintenance Awards program, which strives to promote excellence in landscape maintenance by recognizing professionals who maintain their grounds with the highest quality of care.
Though recognizing site design and overall beauty, the awards focus on the maintenance of each property together with maintenance challenges overcome.
This year's contest was marked for its wide geographical representation, winning entries in the new Public works and Urban campus categories for the second straight year, and the significant intensity and difficulty of maintenance at many of the sites.
This year's judges awarded 6 Grand Awards and 24 Honor Awards from the 13 categories and 2 subcategories.
For the second straight year, in the "Hotel, motel or resort" category, the judges ruled a tie and awarded two Grand Award winners: Mohonk Mountain Resort (New Paltz, N.Y.) and The Breakers (Palm Beach, Fla.). The Capjuluca Resort (Anguilla, British West Indies) received an Honor Award in this category.
The Industrial or office park category received more awards from the judges than any other single category. The Waterfront Plaza (Honolulu) was the sole recipient of the Grand Award, and the five Honor Awards were bestowed upon Abbott Labs (Chicago), Abbott Park (Chicago), Blue Cross/Blue Shield (New Haven, Conn.) and Westfield Companies (Westfield, Ohio).
Anne Arundel County (Annapolis, Md.), which received the first-ever award for the Public works category last year, received a second Honor Award this year.
The voting process A panel of judges, comprised of PGMS members, reviews the entries and determines the preliminary winners. Judges consider each site according to its level of maintenance, the landscape crew's performance in regards to special maintenance challenges, special projects completed in the last 2 years and the site's total operating budget.
Judges for the 1997 awards included: Lawrence Eckerd, The Davey Tree Expert Co.; Stephanie DeStefano, Leisure World of MD Corp.; John Hayes, City of Rockville, Md.; Warren Raymond, Columbia Association; E. Lander Medlin, APPA; and Warren Quinn, American Nursery and Landscape Association.
Representatives of the winning sites received their awards at the PGMS Awards Banquet, which took place Nov. 17 in conjunction with the Green Industry Expo '97 in Charlotte, N.C.
The 1998 PGMA call for entries will appear in the April issue of Grounds Maintenance.
