The master plan for San Jose City College addresses the primary design challenge — to transform the image of a dated vocational campus into a high-technology college campus in the heart of Silicon Valley. This transformation includes the realignment of the entire campus, internally and externally, and presents an entirely new image to the community in which it resides.

The master plan provides a campus model that will meet the needs of the college for its current enrollment of 10,000 students, and an anticipated enrollment of 15,000. The recommendations evolved out of a highly participatory eight-month planning process involving the many constituencies of the college. Presentations and discussions with faculty, staff, students and neighboring community groups broadened the plan's perspective and enhanced the acceptance of proposed developments.

Also included is an overall reorganization of the campus. Academic and athletic zones are realigned; campus circulation is reconfigured; identifiable gateway entries are created; and a new Student Services Center welcomes students at the new entrance. The recommendations transform the image of the college into a new and exciting, park-like college campus, which increases the profile and attraction of the college in the community.
