Project EverGreen Honors Chicago Mayor Richard Daley
Project EverGreen’s Stewardship Award was presented to Chicago Mayor Richard Daley for outstanding leadership in preserving and enhancing the value of green spaces in his city. The award was recently presented at the opening of the Green Industry Expo in Orlando, Fla.
In making the presentation, Paul McDonough, president of the Project EverGreen board of directors, recognized Mayor Daley’s longtime advocacy for the value of green space in sustaining a healthy environment. “‘Green’ has been a key word during Mayor Daley’s administration,” McDonough said, “and Chicago is the better for it.” As background, he cited numerous projects where restoration and addition of green spaces is making a positive impact in the city including:
· A continuing drive to revive and improve Chicago’s 7,730 acre parks system.
· “CitySpace,” a program for converting abandoned and underutilized property into community gardens, parks and other forms of public open space.
· Mayor Daley’s Landscape Awards: An annual program that recognizes the thousands of Chicagoans who help make the city green through environmental beautification efforts.
· The creation of a 20,300 square foot City Hall rooftop garden, which as become a showcase for demonstrating how green spaces can create energy savings and improve air quality.
In commentating on the award, Mayor Daley said, “Protecting and conserving out land, air, water and other natural resources is what Chicago will continue to do in order to achieve the goal of being America’s greenest city. When we lead by example, we show that government can make a difference in improving our environment and making better places to live, work and raise a family.”
Project EverGreen’s Stewardship Award is part of the group’s overall mission to raise awareness of the environment, economic lifestyle benefits of landscapes and promote the significance of those who preserve and enhance green spaces at home, work and play.
