APLD Announces Harry Schuster Service Award Winner
The Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) presented its 2004 Harry Schuster Service Award to Gerry Crouch, APLD, owner of Sunscapes Landscape Designs, Inc., Jacksonville, Fla. The award was given at Kew Gardens, London, England, during 2004 APLD conference.
The award is given in the name of Harry Schuster who was a founding member of APLD and a mentor to many aspiring landscape designers. Known for his energy, enthusiasm, sense of humor and zest for life, the award is given to someone who exemplifies these traits.
In presenting the award, APLD President Patricia Ouderkirk said, “Gerry truly moved the organization into looking at the big picture - we would not be where we are now without her guidance and direction. We honor Gerry as someone who has moved APLD in a positive direction.”
Crouch said she was thrilled when she learned she was to receive the award. “I was overwhelmingly surprised, and, literally, I was speechless.” The award is especially meaningful since she knew Schuster. “My partner and I admired him and looked up to him. He made everyone feel welcome and he was a lot of fun,” she said.
Crouch joined the APLD Board of Directors as treasurer in 1996, when there was no professional staff handling finances. It was a volunteer, hands-on position, requiring a great deal of time. Crouch brought her accounting degree to bear, tracking the organization’s events and activities, and pinpointing those that were costing APLD money. She worked with other volunteers to develop realistic budget that helped the organization grow.
