BASF Turf & Ornamentals Sends 12 Winners To People Vs. The Pros Event
BASF Turf & Ornamental is sending 12 golf course superintendents—all winners in regional qualifying tournaments nationwide—to the ESPN-televised People vs. the Pros national tournament Aug. 6-9 at Pinehurst in North Carolina.
Sponsored in part by BASF, People vs. the Pros allows two amateurs—one in a 50-and-over division and one in a 49-and-under division—to compete head-to-head against PGA professionals Gary McCord and John Daly, respectively. The winner in each division, be it pro or be it amateur, will win $100,000.
A three-day tournament from Aug. 6-8 will yield the two division champions, with play on Pinehurst’s No. 3 and No. 5 courses. On Aug. 9, these two champions will head to Pinehurst No. 2 to compete against John Daly and Gary McCord in an 18-hole stroke-play match that will air on ESPN. The matches against the PGA pros will use the amateurs’ handicap to decide the winner.
People vs. the Pros is now in its second year. Last year, professional golfer Lee Trevino was defeated by amateur Andy Rineer in the 50-plus division, while Daly defeated amateur Andy Chao in the 18-49 division.
BASF will pay expenses for the 12 winners to compete in People vs. the Pros, as well as donate at least $2,000 to each winner’s local chapter of the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of America (GCSAA).
Qualifying tournament winners include: Rickie Lipscomb of Willow Springs, N.C.; Craig Hooks of Raleigh, N.C.; John Newton of Ames, Iowa; Kip Wilson of Sharpsville, N.C.; Greg Wiles of Newark, Ohio; Jeff Schaefer of North Oaks, Minn.; Charlie V. McGill Jr. of Lansdale, Penn.; Dick Rudolph of Rohnert Park, Calif.; Stewart Eyman of South Dennis, Mass.; Brian Honea of McKinney, Texas; Jay Gardner of Jamestown, N.C. and Matthew Fitzpatrick of Dublin, Ga.
