Clemson University Junior Wins STIHL Inc. Scholarship at National Competition
Matthew Cousins, a Clemson University junior, has won the 2005 STIHL Inc. Scholarship from the ALCA Educational Foundation. Cousins was recently presented a $1,000 check on behalf of STIHL, at the 29th annual PLANET Student Career Days.
Cousins was among 850 landscape design and horticulture students in College Park, Maryland, that competed in what is more commonly referred to as, The Landscaper Olympics, coordinated by PLANET (Professional Landcare Network).
I was surprised to receive this award because there are so many exceptional students from quality institutions around the country who would make excellent recipients for this scholarship, Cousins said. I would like to say a personal thank you to STIHL for their support in my educational efforts. The support of such a willing sponsor is vital to the survival of this great national event that has the potential to reinforce the education of young people from every corner of the United States.
John Keeler, national training manger for STIHL Inc., presented the check on behalf of the Virginia Beach based manufacturing company.
I take great pride in honoring students who strive to grow and succeed within the landscaping industry, Keeler said. On behalf of STIHL Inc., we extend our congratulations to all scholarship winners for their continued success in academia and industry.
Participating students find value in Student Career Days because it presents them with so many opportunities to learn and grow within the landscape industry.
I feel better prepared for the future after having been given the opportunity to speak with so many industry professionals, Cousins said.
In the future, Cousins plans to pursue his doctorate degree for a university teaching or research position in horticulture or related field. This summer, Cousins will engage in his honors research project, where he will use his $1,000 award to help offset the expenses incurred from the educational experience.
