Dover Receives ‘Innovator of the Year’ Award from TPI
Gary Dover, founder and president of Bucyrus Equipment Company, was the recipient of Turfgrass Producers International (TPI) “Innovator of the Year” Award at TPI’s 38th Midwinter Conference in Savannah, Ga.
In presenting the award to Dover, TPI president Warren Bell remarked, “From the time Gary established Dover Sod Farms over thirty years ago, he was committed to developing new ways to harvest and install sod. His goal was to provide consistent labor saving and efficient handling procedures that would reduce time, enhance efficiency, reduce costs and increase profitability. Throughout the 1970s he worked on making modifications to equipment and by the late ‘80s he formed Bucyrus Equipment Company, which at the time operated out of the farm shop of Dover Sod Farms. In the spring of 1991 the first ‘Big Roll’ harvesters were released and the rest is history.”
“The ‘TPI Innovator of the Year’ Award is presented to a TPI member who has provided a unique and significant achievement that advances turfgrass sod production through research, engineering, training, marketing, public relations or environmental improvements. Gary’s innovative thinking, his commitment to excellence and his dedication have had a lasting and significant impact on our industry. Today, under Gary’s leadership, Bucyrus Equipment manufactures sod harvesting equipment and big roll installation equipment. For his outstanding contribution to our industry and for the innovative products he has developed; it gives me great pleasure to present Gary Dover with TPI’s 2006 Innovator of the Year Award.”
