Caterpillar plans plant furloughs
Facing shrinking demand for its heavy-duty trucks, Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, Ill., announced plans last week to furlough 3,270 workers in December at five plants.
The furloughs will take place in Illinois and Georgia and should last one to two weeks. The furloughs include managers, manufacturing employees and salaried workers, said Kelly Wojda, a Cat spokeswoman.
The company has not announced who will be furloughed or when, but they will be from Illinois plants in Mossville, Mapleton and Pontiac; and in Thomasville and Jefferson, Ga., Wojda said.
Caterpillar's workforce is about 70,380. Other facilities may face one- or two-week shutdowns to "bring their production in line with demand," she said.
