Gilmore Awarded NLA Hall of Fame Recognition
The American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA) awarded Thomas Odell Gilmore, Sr., of Gilmore Plant and Bulb Company, Julian, N.C., its prestigious National Landscape Association Hall of Fame award during its annual Management Clinic in Louisville, Ky.
ANLA presents the NLA Hall of Fame award each year to an outstanding individual whose acts and deeds in business, home, community and country serve as a guide and challenge for other members of the landscape profession.
Gilmore is a true success story. He was born into the nursery industry, and presently operates the oldest nursery in North Carolina. Gilmore Plant & Bulb is a third generation nursery and landscape contracting company.
Gilmore built his company on a national reputation of quality and excellence. His company has landscaped or furnished plants for high profile establishments such as, Disney World, Sea World, the Pentagon, Tryon Palace in New Bern, N.C., the John F. Kennedy Parkway that runs between Baltimore and Delaware, the Bronx Zoo, The Thomas Jefferson Memorial, and Bush Gardens in Williamsburg, Va. Gilmore Plant & Bulb has won several landscaping awards, including the prestigious White House Award for Excellence for its work on the Tryon Palace.
Gilmore has been very active in the industry and in local and state politics, where he served as an elected member of the North Carolina House of Representatives and as Deputy Secretary of the Department of Human Resources.
He is past president of the North Carolina Association of Nurserymen and a past NLA president. Gilmore recently served on the Board of the JC Raulston Arboretum.
While his list of affiliations and accomplishments, both civic and professional, is indeed impressive, he says that to be successful, one must be willing to change. “To stay on top in this industry, you must change your product every three to four years. The overall quality and variety of plants continue to improve. Our quality pays dividends in repeat business. We have customers that have been with us for 50 years.”
