NYSTA Elects 2004 Officers And Directors

The New York State Turfgrass Association (NYSTA) elected its 2004 officers and directors at the annual meeting held during the Turf and Grounds Exposition in Rochester, New York.

James E. Hornung, Sr., Owner of Elbers Landscape Service, and Great Lakes Athletic Fields, Inc., located in Buffalo, New York, was elected president of NYSTA for 2004. Hornung is also the Head Groundskeeper for the City of Buffalo Division of Parks as well as the current Board President of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County and Main-Amherst Business and Residents Association. Hornung has been instrumental in developing the Western Regional Conference, an annual NYSTA conference held in Buffalo, and serves on that committee. He also serves on the Education, Finance, Government Relations, Trade Show, Merchandise, Grant Review, Winning Fields and Long-Range Planning committees.

James Diermeier, CGM, Reader’s Digest Association of Pleasantville, New York, will serve as Vice President of NYSTA for 2004. Diermeier is the Chair of NYSTA’s Education Committee and has worked diligently to develop outstanding educational programs for the Turf & Grounds Exposition and other regional conferences. Diermeier also serves on the Finance, Nominating, Grant Review and Long-Range Planning committees.

The 2004 Secretary/Treasurer is Michael Maffei, CGCS, Back O’Beyond, Inc. Maffei is also the Chair of the Awards committee, which has granted scholarships to deserving turf students for many years. He also serves on the Education, Finance, Government Relations, Nominating, Trade Show, Council of Agricultural Organizations, Golf Tournaments, Adirondack Regional Conference and Southeast Regional Conference Committees.

Newly elected directors representing various regions of New York State include Greg Chorvas - Cantine Veterans Sports Complex, Saugerties, Cindy Halm - Broccolo Tree & Lawn Care, Rochester, and Roger Lind - Grassland Equipment & Irrigation, Liverpool. Other members currently serving as directors include Owen Regan, A T Sales Associates, LTD; Norman Hummel, Hummel & Co.; Dave Hicks, CGCS, Robert Trent Jones Golf Course; Steve Hyde, Merritt Seed Company; and newly appointed Rick Holfoth, CGCS, Country Club of Rochester. Past President, Steve Griffen, Saratoga Sod Farm, will maintain an active position on the Board of Directors.
