Patten Seed Company Celebrates 50 Years
Over that half-century, Patten has combined solid business practices, strong investments in research and new technology, and creative marketing practices to stake a role in the turf industry. Tireless work and Patten’s technology have resulted in two warm-season grass brands: Centi-Seed centipede grass seed and Zenith Zoysiagrass seed.
Patten Seed Co. CEO Jim Roquemore credits the foresight of his father Bill for charting the company’s path to success. “It is amazing how the company has fulfilled Bill Roquemore’s vision,” he said. “Our success over 50 years is a tribute to him and all those that worked with him through the years.”
The remarkable spread of Centi-Seed across the South and around the world parallels the half-century of growth of Patten Seed Co. Ben Copeland Sr., Patten’s president, happily points out that more than 90 percent of all centipede sod and seed in the United States and abroad originated with Patten Seed Co.
And as its year-long, 50th anniversary celebration unfolds, Patten is honoring the employees and retail partners who also have helped the Lakeland enterprise become an industry bellwether.
Plans are for the six Super-Sod farms and 16 outlets (the sod producing and marketing arm of Patten) to have open houses during the month July where customers can visit and celebrate this great occasion. Patten’s turf experts will be on hand during the open houses to greet customers and answer their seed and sod questions as well as provide free turf selecting and growing related literature.
Community outreach is an integral part of Patten Seed Company’s golden anniversary celebration. The company will participate with Habitat for Humanity by providing grassing products for 50 selected new homes.
