SAFE Foundation launches Ground Level campaign

The Foundation for Safer Athletic Field Environments (SAFE) has initiated its Ground Level campaign to enable research and educational programs designed specifically for athletic fields. The goal is to create a Million-Dollar Endowment.

Over the years, turf students have benefited from SAFE scholarships and from the Sports Turf Managers Association Scholarship program prior to SAFE. In fact, many scholarship recipients are now leaders in the Sports Turf industry and play key roles in turf operations at NFL, MLB and other high profile stadiums across the United States. SAFE recognizes the importance of its scholarship tradition and, at the same time, envisions an expanded role in the areas of athletic field research and educational programs.

While turfgrass research is being conducted, athletic fields are seldom the focus. The demands on athletic fields are very rigorous and require a unique body of knowledge to properly establish and maintain the playing surface. SAFE would like to make the efforts of professional sports turf managers more productive with reliable, quality research. The Ground Level campaign provides the industry an opportunity to financially contribute to this comprehensive sports turf research endeavor.

SAFE also recognizes that many sports fields are not under the care of a professional sports turf manager and, as such, may not be properly maintained. For the casual observer, it is easy to spot a field that suffers from a lack of resources and/or knowledgeable caretakers, but it is difficult to prescribe corrective care. Too often, volunteers maintain America’s ball fields with limited knowledge and resources. While volunteerism is welcomed, those individuals need the information to enable them to provide a better field. SAFE will strive to provide the tools needed to help them meet their goals. The SAFE Foundation wants every sports turf caretaker in America to have access to the “know how” for maintaining safe fields.

By embarking on the Ground Level campaign, SAFE is teaming up with concerned people to collectively improve our sports fields. The generous support of the industry will help provide operational expenses while SAFE builds a Million Dollar Endowment for research and education. Together, we can expect a sports turf revolution.

SAFE is a 501(c)(3) corporation established by the Sports Turf Managers Association “To support sports field specific research, educational programs and environmental concerns to promote user safety.” The results of this Foundation’s support will assist athletes at all levels with safer playing field environments.
