Tecumseh to Close South Georgia Plant
Tecumseh, Mich.-based Tecumseh Products Co. is closing its factory in Douglas, Ga., putting 550 people out of work.
Tecumseh manufactures small engines and carburetors at the Douglas plant, which opened in 1995. Employment peaked at 925 in 2001.
In a statement released last week the company said the closure is part of a plan “to reduce excess capacity by shifting production to overseas, lower-cost manufacturing facilities.” Tecumseh will move operations to a new plant in Curitiba, Brazil.
