TPI president provides 2003 industry perspective
Water could be the greatest single issue facing turfgrass sod producers in 2003, according to Stan Gardner, president of Turfgrass Producers International. In his annual state of the industry report released this week, Gardner provided his perspective on the industry and predictions for the new year along with advice for business owners.
“The water issue is the biggest thing on the radar screen right now and includes everything from shortages to quality to storm water runoff,” Gardner said He predicts it will become an increasing factor impacting the economic health and sales of turfgrass especially for rapidly growing western regions of the United States. Reduced water supplies also impact new home lot sizes and therefore, overall landscaping and maintenance opportunities.
Lastly, Gardner lists the opportunities available to turfgrass producers during leaner years that may include exploring drought tolerant species and niche markets, in addition to understanding Phase II of the Clean Water Act and its ramifications.
