Unemployment sees slight increase
Monthly national figures published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics show unemployment either rose or stayed the same in all regions except for the Midwest in December 2002.
The Northeast increased from 5.5 percent in November to 5.7 percent in December. The regions within the Northeast, New England and Middle Atlantic, each experienced increases from 4.7 to 4.9 percent and 5.8 to 6.0 percent, respectively. Figures for the South stayed the same at 5.4 percent, while specifically the South Atlantic and West South Central stayed the same at 5.1 and 6.0 percent. The East South Central rose from 5.3 to 5.5 percent. The Midwest figures dropped from 5.3 to 5.2 percent, while East and West North Central each stayed the same at 5.7 and 4.2 percent. The West went from 6.2 to 6.3 percent, with the Mountain region remaining at 5.4 and the Pacific increasing from 6.5 to 6.6 percent.
