Komatsu Donates $2 Million Worth Of Aid To Support Tsunami Disaster Relief

Komatsu Ltd., the Tokyo, Japan-based parent company of Komatsu America Corp., has announced a pledge of about $2 million worth of aid to assist the victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster, including an initial cash donation of about $200,000 to the Japanese Red Cross, along with in-kind contributions of construction equipment. In conjunction with its local subsidiaries and distributors in Southeast Asia, Komatsu is dispatching equipment and operators to assist with recovery efforts. In addition, Komatsu America Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Komatsu Ltd., will be making a cash donation to the American Red Cross International Response Fund for tsunami relief efforts. Komatsu America Corp. will match its employees’ contributions to the American Red Cross made between December 26 and January 14.

“We extend our sincere concern and condolences to the people who were devastated by this terrible tragedy,” says David Grzelak, chairman and CEO, Komatsu America Corp. “On behalf of our employees and business partners around the world, we are reaching out to help provide relief to those in need through our financial contributions to Red Cross organizations and our equipment support in collaboration with our distributors.”

The American Red Cross and Japanese Red Cross have been actively involved in relief efforts for those affected by the tsunamis, including providing food supplies as well as other nonfood supplies. On January 7, the American Red Cross announced a massive relief plan, requiring an estimated $400 million to respond to both immediate and long-term needs now and years into the future. The two-phased plan calls for specialized relief in five areas, including food and safe water, healthcare and disease prevention, immediate family supplies, mental health counseling, and disaster preparedness and prevention measures. American Red Cross leadership will continue to work with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, its sister societies and other international partners in the coming days and weeks on this expansive international relief effort.
