Mid-Am Awards Hort Schools
Continuing its yearly tradition, the Mid-America Horticultural Trade Show (Mid-Am) presented cash awards to the top schools represented at the 2006 Student Career Center. The Mid-Am Student Career Center, held in conjunction with the 2006 Mid-Am Trade Show at Chicago’s Lakeside Center in January, provided students with an opportunity to meet with prospective employers to ask questions, learn more about the companies, and make important connections. The 2006 Career Center attracted a record number of students with 486 horticulture scholars from 33 schools in attendance to learn more about the 73 participating companies.
Mid-Am distributed $4,900 to the schools that sponsored the most students. For the seventh consecutive year, Joliet Junior College received the top award. The school sponsored 108 students—the most by far from any of the participating schools—earning a cash award of $1,000. Four schools each received a cash award of $400, including Chicago High School for Ag Sciences in Chicago, Ill., for sponsoring 39 students; Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., for sponsoring 35 students; Kishwaukee College in Malta, Ill., for sponsoring 28 students; and Hubbard High School in Chicago, Ill., for sponsoring 26 students. Two schools each received a cash award of $350 for sponsoring 25 students, including Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, Wis., and Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich.
Four schools each received a cash award of $250, including Milwaukee Area Technical College in Milwaukee, Wis., for sponsoring 22 students; College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Ill., for sponsoring 21 students; the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana for sponsoring 14 students; Mid-State Technical College in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., for sponsoring 13 students. Four schools sponsored 12 students with each receiving a $150 cash award, including the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis.; Triton College in River Grove, Ill.; Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.; and Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill.
Next year, Mid-Am returns to Lakeside Center at Chicago's McCormick Place. The dates of the show are Jan. 17-19, 2007, with the Student Career Center scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 18. Visit the Mid-Am Web site at www.midam.org for details as they become available.
