PLANET Develops Safety Tips Sheet for Green Industry Businesses
The Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) recently announced that its series of four bilingual (English/Spanish) Safety Tips Sheets are completed and available to the entire green industry at www.landcarenetwork.org/cms/programs/safety.html.
Each of the Safety Tips Sheets, developed as a product of the PLANET/OSHA Alliance, is a one-page script that can be downloaded from PLANET’s Web site and used to train workers on four major hazards identified through the Alliance. The Safety Tips Sheets topics include slip and trip injuries, lifting-related injuries, defensive driving to avoid motor vehicle crashes and reducing the risk of amputations.
“Effectively training workers in our industry on these four issues will greatly reduce the risk of painful injuries and even death for employees, and, at the same time, reduce injury-related costs for employers,” PLANET safety specialist Barb Mulhern says. ”And with the growing number of Hispanic/Latino workers in the green industry, it is becoming more and more important that safety training materials be made available in Spanish as well as English.”
The PLANET/OSHA Alliance focuses on providing large and small green industry businesses and their employees, including but not limited to youth workers, "hard to reach" workers, and non-English speaking workers, with information and guidance that will help them reduce strains caused by manual material handling; amputations; motor vehicle crashes; and slip and trip injuries. The Alliance's goals include training and education, outreach and communication and promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health.
