SAFE/Jacobsen Golf Tourney Raises Record Amount for STMA Turf Scholarships
Not only did the 138 players in the Sports Turf Managers Association 6th Annual SAFE/ Jacobsen Golf Tournament have a good time and win some great prizes, but they also raised $17,515 for the Foundation for Safer Athletic Field Environments (SAFE), a new record for the event.
Jacobsen, a Textron Company, has sponsored the SAFE/ Jacobsen Golf Tournament at the STMA Conference and Exhibition for six years. This year's tournament was held in January at the ChampionsGate Golf Club in Orlando.
Money raised through the tournament is used to provide scholarships for college students in turf grass programs. Last year, 10 scholarships totaling $1000 or more were awarded along with a stipend to cover registration and travel costs for all scholarship winners to attend the STMA conference.
STMA CEO Kim Heck says that the association values Jacobsen's dedication to the tournament and its involvement in the industry. "The SAFE/Jacobsen Golf Tournament is a highlight of our annual conference. We sincerely appreciate Jacobsen's commitment to funding the education of the future leaders in sports turf management," Heck says. The winning golf teams of Mark Wadsworth, John Whitehead, Jeff Whitehead and Chris McCarthy in "A" Flight and Neil Pate, Thomas MacKenzie, Jim Laiche and Todd Vanek in "B" Flight each won a Ping G5 driver.
A golf bag emblazoned with the STMA and Jacobsen logos went to the second place team made up of Steve LeGros, Dan Douglas, Luke Yoder and Jim Koontz A Flight and Tom Burns, Steve Wightman. Bob Curry and Ken Curry in B Flight. Gift certificates for merchandise at the pro shop went to the third place teams as well as those players with closest-to-the-pin on two holes per flight and one long-drive hole per flight.
"Jacobsen is honored to support this event which ultimately strengthens our entire industry through SAFE's mission of funding sports field specific research, educational programs and environmental concerns to promote user safety," says Greg Hewitt, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Jacobsen.
