With the installation of BlueYellow, the habitat once again features a healthy stand of turf. As a direct result, the kangaroos stay cooler and are offered more grazing opportunities. In addition, the entire habitat is more visually appealing to zoo visitors because it appears much more refreshing.
“We explored many different ways to establish turf, but decided on BlueYellow as the easiest, most logical option,” said Karl Hackbarth, operations manager, Milwaukee County Zoo. “We knew seed would wash away and sod wouldn’t work because the area is mostly shade and all the varieties in this area require full sun. BlueYellow was the only option to meet all our needs.”
Hackbarth explained, “A group of only about six people installed BlueYellow in a single day. We watered it as necessary and within five weeks, we were able to reopen the space to the kangaroos. We even experienced some heavy rains during the germination process which didn’t adversely affect it.”
